Port Jefferson Names Spelling Bee Champion

A little-known word for a small wooden structure that is formed on the underside of a folding seat in a place of worship was the winning ticket for Port Jefferson Middle School sixth grader Kieran Browne, who was named the school’s Spelling Bee champion.

Kieran spelled “misericords” correctly during the Jan. 13 schoolwide competition, hosted by the school’s English department. More than 80 students in grades 6-8 participated in the initial spelling bee round held in December. Of those participants, 25 of the school’s top spellers moved on to the final round.

Kieran will advance to the regional round of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in February, where he will compete against other local spelling bee champions. We wish Kieran the best of luck.
