Senator Alexis Weik has joined forces with Walk Safe Long Island to deliver law-based pedestrian and bike safety education to the patrons of Brentwood Library on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 2 PM.
The May 14 workshop is an installment of Walk Safe Long Island’s Staying Safe on Our Streets workshop series, all about promoting pedestrian and bike safety through law-based education.
According to AAA Northeast, one pedestrian was struck by a motorist every 33 minutes in New York State, with almost 162,000 people killed or injured from 2010 to 2019. Pedestrian injury and death is particularly common in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Newsday reported the death toll in Suffolk during 2010-2019 was 400, the highest for any county in the state. Nassau County ranked fourth with 284 deaths. Not to mention, it is well-documented that this issue has only increased in the wake of COVID-19.
“As the weather turns nicer, our highways and side streets are being shared more and more by cars, bikes, runners and walkers. In order for everyone to stay safe, it’s important to understand some basic rules of the road, and learn some commonsense tips to avoid danger,” said Senator Alexis Weik. “I want to thank Walk Safe Long Island for teaming with me to help spread the word about roadway safety and help keep make our communities safer for everyone.”
