Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, recently received a donation from the Suffolk County American Legion Auxiliary (SCALA) to help support the organization’s veterans program. Pal-O-Mine provides a range of equine assisted therapy programs to veterans who may be suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) or who may be having a difficult time making the transition from military to civilian life. These programs are offered to active-duty service members and veterans who have served in the Vietnam and Gulf wars, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Operation Enduring Freedom. All programs are provided from Pal-O-Mine’s 13-acre campus which includes both an indoor and outdoor arena, horse stables, organic farm, classrooms, and vocational training center.
In making the donation, SCALA Vice President Carole Anne Wolf stated, “I am proud of all the members of the Suffolk County unit who have contributed to your work. Please accept the donation from our membership along with our appreciation for the work that you do to help the members of the military during this harder than usual time.”
Through its EAGALA Designated Military Program, Pal-O-Mine’s Eagala licensed and certified professionals provide their specialized training and experience to assist military service members and their families with equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning. Clinical evidence and decades of human experience have demonstrated the ability horses have in helping people work through emotional barriers.
