Students Gain Intrinsic Rewards With Volunteer Efforts

Dozens of students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School and Port Jefferson Middle School joined forces with members of the Port Jefferson Rotary Club to help ready Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck for the summer season.

Members of the high school’s Interact Club and the middle school’s National Junior Honor Society spent a recent weekend preparing cabins, dorm rooms and buildings. Students also raked and added mulch to the flowering plants at the Center Moriches camp, which provides special needs children and young adults with camping experiences.

According to Interact Club adviser Deirdre Filippi, the annual volunteer event is always a success for the students and helps them to understand not only the needs of others, but how simple efforts go a long way in serving the greater community.
