Art educators across the country experienced the insights of Seaford High School teacher Michael Kerr, whose article was recently published. His story, “Face Your Fears,” appeared in the October 2018 edition of SchoolArts magazine.
The article is based upon a caricature assignment in his Comic and Cartoon Illustration class, in which students have to create expressive cartoon caricatures of themselves. They are tasked with confronting a physical characteristic that they are insecure about and thoroughly exaggerate it. The result is a comical caricature drawing. Mr. Kerr said that over the years his students have expressed how much better they felt about themselves after completing the project.
Mr. Kerr wrote and submitted the article more than three years ago. After initially having it accepted, it was a long wait for the story to be published, and he noted the irony of the October edition’s theme — perseverance.
Although the students he highlighted in his article have since graduated from Seaford High School, he said it was nice to have them showcased.
“It was a goal of mine to get published in SchoolArts Magazine since I was studying to be an art teacher in college,” he said. “I see it as a badge of honor to be included in an art education publication.”
Mr. Kerr is in his 12th year teaching art at Seaford High School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in art education from SUNY New Paltz and a master’s degree in secondary art education from Queens College.
