Pumpkins tell a story at Birch Lane

A reading unit had a Halloween twist at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District as children created clever depictions of popular storybook characters.

Each second-grader decorated a pumpkin to look like the main character from a fiction book. Among the pumpkin creations were the Cat in the Hat, Captain Underpants and Flat Stanley. Students worked on the projects at home with their parents, and all the pumpkins were then displayed in the main lobby. They also completed book reports analyzing different literary elements.
