The Department of Veterans Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Antonio Sanchez, MHSA, FAPA, FACHE as the new director of the Northport VA Medical Center. Dr. Sanchez will oversee delivery of health care to more than 31,000 Veterans. The Northport VA Medical Center provides health care services to Long Island veterans residing in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, and rehabilitation medicine. The facility is also home to four (4) community living center (CLC) programs, five (5) community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), two (2) VET Centers throughout both counties, and a sizable outpatient program.
“We are excited to bring Dr. Sanchez on board as the new director of the Northport VA Medical Center,” said Dr. Joan E. McInerney, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 2 Director. “His sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the facility, the employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the Veterans we are honored to serve. We anticipate he will arrive at the medical center within the next 45 to 60 days to begin his appointment.”
Dr. Sanchez joined the VA more than 18 years ago and has held progressive leadership positions at the VA Caribbean Healthcare System, San Juan, Puerto Rico. Most recently, he has been serving as the Acting Medical Center Director at VA Caribbean Healthcare System, San Juan, Puerto Rico, a complexity level 1A tertiary teaching facility providing comprehensive healthcare and operating 230 hospital beds, 30 psychiatric beds, a 122 bed Community Living Center, among others for a total of 382 operating beds. The System has a main hospital in San Juan and 10 clinics in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He has overall responsibility for 3,700 full time equivalent employees and a $600 million budget. The System serves 65,000 unique Veterans with more than 1 million outpatient visits and 12,500 inpatients per year.
Dr. Sanchez is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has a Board Certification as a fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Sanchez received both his Doctor of Medicine degree and Masters in Healthcare Services Administration from the University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus.
With more than 1,800 staff, in addition to the main multilevel healthcare medical facility in Long Island, the Northport VAMC offers services in community-based outpatient clinics across both Suffolk and Nassau Counties. The facility also provides various support to the two (2) National Veteran Cemeteries located in eastern and western Suffolk County, and funds two off-site emergency temporary shelters for homeless Veterans. The Northport VA Medical Center is a teaching hospital, delivering a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, alongside education and research.
