Long Island High School for the Arts Students Impress College Reps From Across The Nation

Representatives from 40 colleges and universities from across the country visited Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) in Syosset recently for the school’s annual College Fair and Student Showcase.

During the hour-long performance, families and college reps got a chance to see the school’s talented dance, music and theater students demonstrate all they’ve learned. Performances ranged from song and dance solos to jazz ensemble pieces and show-stopping theatrical numbers. They included members of the newly-formed Social Impact Repertory Company, as well as LIHSApella (the school’s acapella group) and selections from the Chamber Choir. Stylized exhibits of student artwork were also displayed around the building.

After the performance, students and their families met with representatives from dozens of prestigious colleges and universities including Syracuse University, Marymount Manhattan College, the New York Institute of Technology, the Savannah College of Art and Design, and several SUNY schools.

“We unveiled new repertory companies for the show,” said LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker, “and they were very well received. The turnout of college reps, along with students and their families, made it a full house and a very successful evening.”

“This event was a pleasant surprise,” said Letitia Stancu, a piano professor at Montclair State University in New Jersey. She accompanied her colleague, college rep Ryan Davila, to the fair at LIHSA. “This was my first time attending, and it’s wonderful to see the talent and passion of these students. They were enthusiastic and friendly, and definitely college-ready!”
