During the month of October, local fire departments across the Sachem Central School District visited each of the 10 elementary buildings to educate students on the importance of fire safety for annual Fire Prevention Week.
As part of the numerous districtwide presentations, firefighters performed several engaging demonstrations highlighting the unique abilities of the department’s equipment. Students watched in awe as firefighters descended more than 70 feet from a ladder truck, removed car doors as part of an extrication drill and watched firefighters adorn self-contained breathing apparatuses and fire gear.
In addition to the demonstrations, firefighters explained in detail several fire safety lessons and ways to stay safe in emergency situations. Concluding each visit, firefighters held question-and-answer sessions with students to answer any additional questions.
