July’s Charity of the Month
Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.
Below is a list of some of their upcoming events that YOU can attend to help take care of our environment:
July 28th they are hosting a Shellfish Restoration Project from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Shellfish Hatchery in Cedar Beach, Mt. Sinai.
August 11th they will be hosting a second Shellfish Restoration Project from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the same location.
August 12th they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson.
CSLI also runs programs for camps, schools and any other interested groups that include activities such as shellfish hatchery tours, marine life identification, plankton identification under microscopes, use of the interactive presentations at the Marine Stewardship Education Center and touch tank presentations.
There are plenty of ways that you can become involved with Coastal Steward Long Island. They are always looking for more volunteers and are currently looking for people to help in the following areas: beach cleanups, planting oysters, data collection, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work. As a community service organization, they will provide community service credit to their volunteers if needed.
Please visit www.CoastalSteward.org to view more information about their upcoming events and e-mail Info@CoastalSteward.org if you are interested in getting involved!
A Special Partnership
Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk and South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers are working together to provide businesses with a special vehicle to advertise their products/services while at the same time supporting Habitat Suffolk and ReStore on Long Island. ReStore provides Long Islanders with a low-cost alternative toward finding all of their home improvement and building supplies. We will be promoting ReStore in our newspaper and taking sponsorship ads to help support this organization. Contact Bob Hall at BobH@SouthBaysNeighbor.com or at 631.226.2636, ext. 258 for more details on this special advertising program. Also, Habitat Suffolk will be holding its 20th annual Roger Metcalf Memorial Golf Classic, “Nine and Dine,” on Monday, September 24th, at Stonebridge Golf and Country Club in Smithtown.
