Helping You Help Others
October’s Charity of the Month is:
The Maurer Foundation!
By: Noelle Lambert
The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been serving the community for over 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction.
Responding to the need in her own practice, breast surgeon Dr. Virginia Maurer first made breast health education programs available to her patients and to their families. These programs became so successful, which encouraged her to reach out to the general public, but particularly to adolescent women through high school breast health programs. One of Dr. Maurer’s beliefs is that the choices we make early in life can affect our future beast health. Dr. Maurer actively participates as Founder, motivator and as an inspiration for this foundation. As of today, the Maurer Foundation has brought their life-saving message of breast cancer prevention and early detection to over 80% of Long Island’s Public High Schools!
From reaching just over a thousand people in 1995, The Maurer Foundation, supported by steadfast board members, experienced staff and gifted volunteers, has continued to broaden their capacity, allowing them to reach hundreds of thousands of people!
Through partnerships, they educate the public to strive toward their goal to be recognized as the leading source of current and accurate breast health information!
The Maurer Foundation is holding their Cocktails for a Cause event, which will take place on October 23rd at Havana Central Restaurant from 6-8PM.
Attendees will enjoy an evening of appetizers, drink specials, raffles and more, as this organization raises funds and awareness for their mission! Register today at www.MaurerFoundation.org/Cocktails.
If you are interested in volunteering or interning with The Maurer Foundation, the opportunity is available! They are currently seeking volunteers to lend a helping hand in their corporate office in Melville. If you have good computer skills, can help filing and answering phones and want to volunteer at a great organization that allows you to determine your hours, consider this opportunity!
Additionally, they are seeking a Program Department Intern as well as a Development and Social Media Intern. The purpose of the Program Department internship is to assist in the Program Department’s primary focus of delivering breast health programs to schools, colleges, community groups as well as businesses on Long Island. The purpose of the Development and Social Media internship is to assist the Development Department in creating a strategy to increase community awareness of the Foundation’s mission through an enhanced social media presence.
If you are currently enrolled in a 4-year accredited college/university or graduate program and are interested in interning or in volunteering, please contact their Development Manager, Debbie Goldman, at (631) 524-5151 or by email at DGoldman@MaurerFoundation.org.
