In partnership with the Massapequa Elks Lodge and the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition, YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) will present the Dangers of Vaping and Opioid Abuse and Overdose Prevention for families and concerned community members on Wednesday, August 21st at 7:00 p.m. at the Massapequa Elks Lodge, 2162 Veterans Boulevard, Massapequa. Free naloxone (narcan) training will also be available. To register, contact Margaret Motis at (516) 398-6245.
The prevention education program addresses two substance abuse trends that continue to dominate today’s national and local news headlines: opioids and vaping. According to the Centers for Disease Control, on average, 130 Americans die every day from opioid related drug overdoses. In addition, America’s teens are reporting dramatic increases in the use of vaping devices, with 37.3 percent of 12th graders reporting “any vaping” in the past 12 months, compared to just 27.8 percent in 2017 [National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and 2018 Monitoring the Future (MTF) Survey].
Since 1997, YESCCC and MTAC has worked together to prevent youth substance misuse and promote healthy families in the Massapequas.
