Celebrating apples

The aroma of freshly cooked apples and cinnamon wafted through Wantagh’s Forest Lake Elementary School as kindergarten students cooked applesauce from fresh apples. Using a Foley mill, each student took turns churning the wedge to separate the skin from the meat of the apple and then tasted the delicious culinary creation.

During the week, the students also participated in various apple activities. They taste-tested red, green and yellow apples to determine their favorites, graphing their answers on the Smartboard. They also studied the star-like inside of an apple and created construction paper apples, using their fingertips to paint seeds. The kindergartners also sorted apples by their attributes and described the fruit using their senses. There was also a literary component to the lesson in that various apple-themed books were read each day to celebrate Apple Week.
